El Norma Day Smitherman, 81, of Hillsboro died Sunday, February 28, 2010, at Town Hall Estates Nursing Home in Hillsboro.

Norma was born December 24, 1928 in Teague the daughter of the late Josh and Emma Izetta (Johnson) Canady.

On June 12, 1948, she married W. C. Day in Teague and he preceded her in death on April 2, 1972. She later married M. G. Smitherman on October 17, 1975 and he preceded her in death in November 2001.

She had lived in Fairfield before moving to Hillsboro in 1987. Norma always kept an immaculate house and yard. An avid fisherman, she also enjoyed dancing, playing 42, sewing, and quitling. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Hillsboro.

Also preceding her in death were her son, Norman Clark Day; grandson, William Ross Cargile; and three sisters, Varina Daniel, Maurice Holder, and Jackie Patton.

Survivors include two daughters, Rena Vee Cargile and husband, Danny, of Abbott and Renita Henley and husband, Michael, of McGregor; four sisters, Lena Faye Bonner and husband, Pete, of Fairfield, Alice Minchew of Grosbeck, Carol Ann Bowers of Dallas, and Ocha Lee Strong of Jamestown, CA; 4 grandchildren, Tammy Carile Mayo and husband, Les, of Stephenville, April Cargile King and husband, Bryan, of Canadian, Jody Shawn Day of Huntsville, and Amanda Henley Dominy and husband, James, of Lexington; and six great-grandchildren, Connor and Kelton King of Canadian, Hunter and Cameron Mayo of Stephenville, Brianna Day of Huntsville, and Taylor Ann Dominy of Lexington.
